As teachers, we love to travel the world. We also love to learn. Globalizing your teaching can be done without leaving home, but for those who would like to seek opportunities for professional growth and travel, please consult the list below. This is not every single group out there who has programs, but it is a good place to start. A year ago, who would have ever thought Teachers for Global Classrooms would be sending me to Russia.
Below is an annotated list of some of the many possible travel and learning opportunities available for teachers. Please consult links as deadlines and other pertinent information varies. I have only briefly annotated.
1. Costa Rica Education Immersion Program--this group offers customization to their programs. Teachers are encouraged to create cross cultural skills. Teachers of all subjects, from Biolgoy to Sociology, are encouraged to apply. This program is not fully funded. Teachers will pay their way.
2. The Earthwatch Institute Educator Opportunities--this offers a focus on conservation and sustainability as well as life-long learning. Fellowships will travel within the USA, the UK or Australia. This is a fellowship.
3. Fulbright Teacher Exchange--sponsored through the US government, the Fulbright is a 3-6 month program that allows teachers to attend and teach classes at international universities. This is a fellowship.
4. Japan-U.S. Teacher Exchange Program (Fulbright)--ESD--Education for Sustainable Development is the focus of this program that will send 24 teachers or administrations to Japan to share ideas about ESD. Teacher and administrators of all grade levels are encouraged to apply. This is a fellowship.
5. K-12 Study Canada--this is a six day professional development that will send teachers to Ottawa or Montreal. Teachers are required to pay $600 plus the coast of travel.
6. Keizai Koho Teacher Fellowship--This is a fellowship that sends teachers to Japan. It is open to Secondary Teachers in Economics, Social Studies or History. This is a fellowship.
7. The Korea Society: Teacher Fellowships--This is a fellowship designed for the teacher that is also involved in textbook writing with a focus on East Asia.
8. Malone Fellowship in Arab and Islamic Studies--Participants are responsible for travel to and from Washington DC, but this program specializes in Arab and Islamic Studies and for those professionals who want to develop a deeper interest.
9. The National Endowment for the Humanities--Each year, NEH offers tuition-free opportunities for school, college, and university educators to study a variety of humanities topics. Stipends of $1,200-$3,900 help cover expenses for these one- to five-week programs.
10. Primary Source Study Tours--The study tour this year is heading to Beijing, China. 2014 Study Tour: Building Global Leaders: An Education Delegation to China

Open to district and school administrators nationwide
Travel to China as part of a team of influential educators to examine the triumphs and challenges of the Chinese school system
11. Program for Teaching East Asia--This is through the Center of East Asia Studies in Colorado, and there are several different summer programs available.
12. South Africa Partners Educational Tours--Educator Tour South Africa's tour introduces U.S. educators to teachers, students, and school administrators in South Africa. .Participants are carefully matched with South African peers and placed to work for three full days in East London school classrooms that mirrored their own.
13. Teachers for Global Classrooms--This is more than just a travel experience. Teachers, grades 6-12 of any discipline, will immerse themselves in an 8-week course about global education. This is then followed up by a field experience. In 2014 Fellows were sent to Ghana, Morocco, Russia, Colombia, India and the Philippines. Teachers cannot choose a country, and the countries are not the same each year.
14. Toyota International Teacher Program--fully funded by Toyota--Since 1998, the Toyota International Teacher Program has sent a total of 685 U.S. secondary school teachers on intensive study tours to Japan, Costa Rica, the Galapagos Islands, and South Africa.
15. Volunteers for Peace--traveling to many, many nations, this group allows the person with a spirit for volunteerism to travel the world helping others. The price for travel is kept low, but countries, projects and prices vary.
