Location
Belleville Illinois is a metro-east suburb of St. Louis University.
Universities
There are many opportunities to become more global within the university framework. Just in a small radius around Belleville, we have St. Louis University, Washington University, University of Missouri St. Louis Campus, McKendree University, and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Each of these has a global focus and separate international programs. Within these universities, I have highlighted some below.
Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville SIUE is a growing university, and it is increasing its focus on diversity.
St. Louis University Atlas Program -- The goal of the Atlas Program is to increase awareness of the global issues that confront us today in an effort not only to promote discussion, but to inspire and inform action.
High Schools
We have two large high schools in Belleville as well, and we are currently working on expanding our international focus. Over the past two years, I have been a coordinator for World Link, a non-profit that works with two Department of State programs. These programs are the FLEX Program and the YES Program. The best way to begin being global is to live locally but explore the world globally. Many people are not able to travel, but by hosting a student, they will be able to learn at least a little about the world around them.
Belleville East High School--Well Wishers--this group of high school students raises money for wells to be dug in Africa
Belleville West High School--Ambassador Club--projects include raising money for Save The Rain, and a summer exchange funded by the US Department of State called Youth Leadership Program with Belarus. Only three schools in the USA are able to participate in this program, and Belleville West is one of those three.
Local Institutions
Belleville Rotary Club--As far as international programs go, the rotary has a longstanding, and good reputation about fostering travel and for those those who seek opportunity, it is a good place to start.
Belleville Illinois Sister City--Belleville Illinois teams up with Paderborn, a city in Germany and they offer student and adult reciprocal exchanges.
